2026 Old Computer challenge: Day 5

Was busy with work most of today, no progress on anything to speak of. I've barely caught up with people's OCC emails. Nice of tekk to do that roundup on the mailing list, though, so I can see how everyone else is getting on.

[Later]

Well, that was an unexpected adventure! I was writing this entry when the finicky power connector struck again: turns out it had been discharging all of this evening since I turned it on! I tried to boot it back up after reconnecting the power and the screen wouldn't work, even if I left it for some time to charge. This meant I had to cheat again and look up the manual on my phone. After a few deep breaths, I went in search of what was wrong. I disconnected the battery, disconnected and removed the keyboard and was close to removing the HDD when I found it had been reassembled badly, presumably by a previous owner, and the HDD was inserted behind the casing on one side instead of in front, and no amount of case bending would get it out (at least not without breaking something). I sighed and reassembled everything - it would have to wait for another day. I then plugged the power back in and turned it on to make sure I hadn't broken anything further with my prodding... And the screen came on! No idea what fixed it as I didn't get that far, but I'm so glad it's working again!

Time to pack up now and hope it still works tomorrow...

Laptop manual, should I need it again...
