The 2026 Old Computer Challenge

After a year off when I didn't get myself organised in time, I intend to take part in the Old Computer Challenge again this year.

The New Website for the Old Computer Challenge

Hardware

This year, I am using different hardware. I have recently bought a Compaq Netbook (I don't remember the exact model number, but I think it's related to the HP Mini 1000 series) from about 2009. While it has been expanded by a previous owner to an incredible(!) 2GB of RAM and an Intel Atom N270 running at up to 1.6GHz (though usually around 800MHz), hopefully it still classifies as old enough for the challenge. Interestingly, the screen is lower resolution than the older PC I used before (only supporting 600p instead of 768p, or even 1024p under the right OS), so this may make things harder.

Software

I am running TinyCore 16 (Kernel 6.12.11-tinycore) on this PC (from a USB-stick so I can still access Windows 7 if required), so a much newer OS than my other OCC PC is running. However, the capabilities are mostly similar: I am using flwm-topside and mostly using terminal applications. However, this year, instead of Mutt, since I have increased RAM available, I have installed Claws (though this may prove to be a mistake as it seems to deal with large email boxes much more slowly). Similarly, I have access to Dillo and Offpunk, though I will try to use them sparingly.

Theme

This year, the theme is "Make Something". Since I am on more powerful hardware than in previous years, my plan is to do something that is slightly more taxing for this poor little Atom CPU... I have put SunVox onto here alongside a video player and some downloaded YouTube Tutorials and I'm going to make music. I have used SunVox before, but I haven't learned it properly so I'm probably making some major mistakes etc., and I know I'm not fully using the capabilities of the software, so I'd like to come out of this coming week with more knowledge and some music.

I think that about covers things?
